We planted this cacti garden on October 11th, 2000, the day my Father died.
The tall cactus behind me was a foot tall, and had just two branches...now look at it!
Every Summer it sprouts the most stunning vanilla scented flowers from alien looking buds.
We do pretty well with cacti here, and have rather a lot.
'Twas initially G's passion, but I am equally as enamoured of them nowadays!

Thought I'd leave you today with a piece by a favourite New Zealand artist, Bill Hammond.
I read this earlier about some of his pieces that were rescued from the Lava Bar in Lyttleton after the earthquake going up for auction tonight.

I love the hem of your frock and that cacti is a lovely memorial to your Dad. I love Bill Hammond's work - its just amazing.
Phwah woman! You look hot to trot! I'm salivating over that green frock, & your amazing legs! I love the colour combination, & the accessories & tights. Gorgeous handbag too. One of my favourite outfits on you. And that feck off bow is so pretty! Xx
Simply stunning! I love everything about this outfit.
Another stupendous outfit--Hurrah Hurrah!! I just love those tights and purple shoes. That jacket--OMG- purple gorgeousness!!!!
ABsolUTely fanTABulARSE!
What an amazing combo of colours - love the shoes and tights especially.
Love the lilac and green combination you look gorgeous as usual. The cactus is stupendous, I have such a soft spot for cacti, I want cacti inspired clothes! xxxx
Firstly - LOVE that painting.
Now on to YOU, gorgeous creature of beauty! How fabulous is that mini dress? I love the patch pockets and groovy design on the hem. The jacket from Vix is a beauty, and your double tights action always makes me think, why don't I do that? And why don't I have any purple shoes?
You have brightened up a dull morning!
Love you more than G's enormous cactus! xxxxx
That painting rocks, I could look at it for years and see something different every time.
I've always marvelled over your splendid cacti, I wish we could grow such exotics here. I take endless photos when I'm abroad.
That crimplene frock is spectacular and the blazer and killer tights take it to another dimension.
I love it when the sun's shining on your blog, I can live vicariously through you!
Love you!

Ohh... the colours on the tights and the shoes.. And the rest of the outfit - so fab !
The painting is very cool.
I always loved cactuses for many reasons, the first is that they are the only plants that survives my nightmarish green thumb, but they are also a love metaphor: they don't need so much care to grow. They are just beautiful like you and the mini dress you are wearing here went straight to my heart, the color and the Japanese scale print are just my cup of tea and it's even more stunning with the liliac jacket!
Love xxxxxxxx
I must hang on to my chair. I'm having an attack of psychedelicosis. Your patterns are twizzling my brain. Your dreams must be contagious...
Wowsers women I'm in a spin over the dress and the amazing print detail. The heels are splendid and the bag sweetens the deal.
First thing me and the bloke would buy if we won big on lotto would be a green and gold bill hammond, guys a genius. Also genius about this post is the purple and mint green combo which i'm going to copy for my next knitting project. The print on that dress is ace x
Sexilicious babe in Purple and Green!!!
I had not heard of Bill Hammond, so thank you for introducing me to his work (I learn so much from bloggers!). I love this egyptian/japanese/18th-c tapestry painting. The link to the article is broken, though:(
You look scrumptious in this outfit. It's dizzingly exuberant and the memorial cactus makes a lovely backdrop.
These colours and patterns just blew me away! You always look so striking, but this outfit is particularly smashing! xx Shauna
Eek, this is one of mymostest favouritest outfits ev-eeeerrr!! I could lick your hot legs right now you sexy mama!!
Fecking perfection. You look edible.
xxxxx
Oh my gourd - this outfit is fucking ART! From top to toe you are AMAAAAZING darling!
The cactus garden is wonderful... and I love that my little cactus lives in my little burro planter and makes me feel connected to you and G-Star too. Succulents are the plants of love. I have declared it so.
Love your gloriarse bones! Sarah xxx
I love the idea of a cactus as a memorial. They look right pretty when they are in bloom.
exacly what I like.
your cacti are stunning!!!
You are a vision of minty lavender delight!! Love how all of the patterns work together!!
So awesome that I almost get pissed that this look (including all details) not belong to me ... or at least - the combination might at least have been my idea. Unfairly!
Holy sweet queen of color, this outfit has me singing. Lala la la laaaaaa! The tights are crazy good and with the purple shoes, bam! Love it! My mom has a succulent obsession so I always admire them, they remind me of her just as this reminds you of your Dad. I do dig the picture too, so much going on!
Xxoo
Who's that sexy lady??? Damn that little green dress is cute. And so is your legwear. I always love when you take photos with your cacti.
Damn, it's got to get colder here so I can start double tighting. I have a cacti garden on my porch. I love how strange they look. Last summer I bought one and forgot about it. A couple of weeks later, I found it in the truck of the car! It was still alive!
PS: love the earrings
I love everything about this outfit--the combination of green and purple, the mixing of textures, all the little details from the tights to the earrings to the floral purse. It's fabulous!
Great outfit, especially the tights (are they 2 pairs?). I like cacti, but it's just too wet to grow them outdoors here. Could we see a picture when it flowers please?
I love your bag! It's amazing! you look beautiful! Kisses x x x x
Wow I am in awe of your purple and greens! Totally amazing colour combo. I love the tights, bag and shoes in particular. You look stunning in all your glorious colour coordination.
Plus the art you recommend is just beautiful, can't believe it's by a modern artist as it looks like something from the Old Masters!
I'm just back from a jaunt to Paris, do pop in to the blog if you fancy meeting me in Le Marais, just bring your best hat and matching shoes...
You can tell the weather's getting better over there, the Helga pins are slowly creeping out. You look gorgeous, I love your combo of tights and the virgin Mary necklace is beautiful too. I quite like cacti too, but I think it would be too wet over here to grow one. x
I love your bag!!

Helga, I'm running out of ways to say how much I adore what you do - you've outdone yourself here, you are electric!!!
Lovely way to honour your dad as well. xo
Can I marry your sunnies? XXX
What a pretty number you have here. Cactus is my favorite plant by far. It's so poetic and resilient. You can transplant it and put it through harsh conditions and it always thrives. It's like the human heart and how beautiful that it has grown since that day.
Helga, I love the idea of two pairs of tights! Love the colors here!! You look head-to-toe absolutely perfect, as usual!! About the cacti. I do like them, but they don't fit in with our landscape here -- lots of pines and such. They look out of place. But I do love them! I love little succulents like hen and chicks. They seem to fit in better here in a little rock garden or something. Can't wait til I get my garden the way I want it!!
xoxo
Lynn
fascinated by the bird people in Hammnond's work! You look gorgeous, I'm obsessed with lilac and mint green at the moment, it look gorgeous on you as ever. I love your cactus too, they never grow like that here, they'd drown xxxxx
you're a dream in mauve and green!, love all that pretty prints and colors and the motive on your dress hem is my favorite!!
and I'm always a huge fan of purple shoes
besos
That is a very healthy looking cactus! I managed to kill one once, which I didn't think was possible. My GAWD woman, I think this is my absolute favourite outfit of yours--the colour combo, the double-tights, the patterns--it is a friggin work of genius!!
OMG Helga, I think you are wearing my favourite outfit ever. I just love the colours and the patterns. Utterly divine. I wish I could find treasure like Souxie posters in the shed here, - all we have is a few bit of firewood and some rather large spiders. I am very impressed with the cacti - no chance of growing here in temperate Dunedin.
Dad's cactus is beautiful and it looks so happy in that cozy spot:)). From your headpiece, necklaces, jacket, handbag, frock, tights and shoooooooz, I neeeeeeed to stroke and feel all of it!!!! Bloody marvellous baby! Bend over and I'll give that arse a lovely squeeze while I'm at it!!!!!!! Oooooooooh I would LOVE to get a crack at Melanie's yellow skirt! I've been wearing the dark red 1940s frock for two days in a row, the cut-off hem is the perfect maxi length for me - it's so gorgeous to wear ... thank you!!!!! xoxox
I re-posted one your images and credited you.

The tights together FUCKING fabulous!!!!!!!!!
your the queen of mixing prints and patterns. wow.
That cactus garden is beautifull. I so much love the big one behind you. They don't grow outside overhere... It is a great way to remind your dad.
And I am in love with your dress. It is so cute. And I love the way the purple matches the green. You look cute!
xx
