The hog of the forsaken, well, he ain't like you and I

G and I are obsessed with the show Deadwood.
It's fair to say that it's the best TV show ever , better than sliced bread, better than glitter, and even better than fabularse frocks!
(Is that blasphemy? The bit about the frocks?!)
The set and costume design are outstanding, the cast and script mind blowing!!!
I think Calamity Jane is my favourite character, and she has inspired a great deal of cocksucker-ing in our household.
But I also adore Al Swearengen, and I rather like Alma Garret, Trixie  and E.B. Farnams funny little cook Richardson (who reminds me of a fellow at work we call The Ferret).
If you haven't seen this show, DO!
Sadly, there were only 3 seasons made; it became too expensive to continue. This was before Mad Men came along and caused a splendid saturation of period TV shows, dammit!

Anyways.
G and I have been re-watching it all again, slowly, savouring every morsel.......
Between Christmas Day and New Year we had a great deal of torrential rain.
When I was sleeping, G and I watched quite a bit of it, and I was inspired, when we had a break in the weather, to frock up as Deadwood style as I could manage.

I need to look up this show! Have you seen Canavale? Its about a traveling carnival during the dustbowl in the USA - very creepy and amazing costumes. I love the Deadwood outfit - its very western noir.

Slap me with your gloves, Helga! That's one punting outfit. I lost track of Deadwood (blasphemous I know) but will keep my eyes open for it again, inspired by you of course.

What a glorious tribute this is! You look killer! I have never seen this show but I will tell you I was in a play in high school that starred Calamity Jane so I know what a bad ass she is. You remind me of her totally and completely.

It's a mystery to me that I have never heard of this programme. I need to do some research because if you reckon it's good, I reckon I want to try it. I love this photoshoot! It is so different for you - you rarely wear a maxi, but of course you rock it and I love the finish you have applied to the pics. Happy. New Year my dear, looking forward to reading about more of your adventures. Xxxxxx

I LOVED Deadwood - watched all three seasons a few years back. At the time it bothered me that I could enjoy a show so much that had the word "cocksucker" in every sentence of dialogue, but I loved the characters, filthy-mouthed though they were, Al and Calamity Jane being my faves. I do think it was partly responsible for my increased use of the word "Fuck" though....

YOu look very "of the time period", just watch out for the Chinaman's hogs.

Love the photos Helga and I love love love Deadwood. Swearengen's monologues are incredible. I adore Trixie the Whore and Calamity Jane. I have watched it a couple of times. First time I was recuperating from surgery, on the couch, and every time we finished a season, my darling one would hop on the bus and go into to town to get the next one, we COULD NOT WAIT. I couldn't believe so many of the characters were based on real people, and Swearengen was really called Swearengen! I love the scene where Calamity Jane and her girlfriend walk the children to the new school. It is incredibly moving. I love every second of it. Second time through I paid special attention to the prostitutes and how they were played, and noticed, though they were in the background often and minor characters, the depiction of their depression and difficulties and what they gleaned in their lives together. Hits the right note. Love the hat, Helga, we should all try out those top hats with ribbons they wore. LOVE DEADWOOD too, often recommend it. THanks for writing about it and the photos.

Ooh you would certainly cut a swathe through the goldfields Helga. I love Deadwood too - the language! Freaking Shakespearean! Al Swearengen was my favourite - we recently watched five seasons of Justified which starred Timothy Olyphant (Seth) which was okay. Nothing has really matched Deadwood.

That skirt! I used to have one just like it that was once my mothers, but in a fit of teen angst I threw it away. Sigh. I regret that deeply!

You look incredible!

That hat is fantabulous! I love the saucy angle you have it perched at. I never got into Deadwood, but I think Ian McShane is one of the sexiest men on the planet. He could strip you with his voice...mmm...

Simon adores Deadwood and has the box set, so I think I had better watch it, don't you? And if that fabulous outfit is an indication of the costumes, I think I will do a lot of oohing and ahhing in delight!
I love these photos, all grainy and sexy and mysterious and beautiful. Love the print on that skirt (it seems ages since we saw you sashaying around in a maxi, darling), the bosom is looking magnificent in that blouse, and the tweedy cape is divine. And the hat, oh the glorious hat! Did G get all hot and bothered at the very sight of you? I know I am! xxxxxxx

PS. Trees is right, you would probably like Carnivale too. xxxx

Oh yes we loved "Deadwood" too. Probably the first "Western"-type show I've ever enjoyed! Why does it seem like all the good shows last 2 seasons, and the crappity-crap sticks around for 12, hmmmm? Did you ever watch "Carnivale"? That was an interesting one too.
